Low-sodium pasta sauce for babies

Here’s an easy but flavorful tomato pasta sauce that is baby-friendly, but kids and adults will love it too. Not only is it low in sodium with no added salt, it also contains a healthy mix of veggies. The recipe is easily adaptable to older eaters by adding in salt (and any other seasonings) as desired.

Why no added salt for babies?

Babies under 6 months generally get enough sodium from breastmilk or formula already. Once they start solids, they do not need much more sodium and many foods already have naturally occurring levels of sodium. As a result, it’s not recommended to add additional salt when cooking for babies under 1 year of age, which is why most of my recipes have a salt-free or low-sodium option.

To include more flavor or sodium for older kids and adults, it’s easy to adapt the recipe to add salt at the end.

Recipe

Low-Sodium Tomato Pasta Sauce

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tomatoes medium
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 tsp olive oil extra virgin
  • 1 cup mixed salad greens
  • Italian seasoning blend
  • Black pepper
  • 1 oz Ricotta cheese optional

Instructions
 

  • Dice tomatoes and mince garlic. Finely chop the mixed greens and set aside.
  • Add tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and seasoning. Simmer on low-medium heat for ~5-8 minutes or until the sauce is starting to thicken.
  • Add in the chopped mixed greens. Simmer for another few minutes until the greens are cooked and the sauce is thick.
  • Add black pepper to taste.
  • Mix the sauce with your pasta and (optionally) ricotta cheese. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

If you don’t have Italian seasoning mix, you can blend your own! The mix I have contains marjoram, thyme, rosemary, savory, sage, oregano, and basil.
