Let’s make these yummy tofu cubes with peanut sauce. These tender tofu pieces are perfect for baby-led weaning.
Tofu with peanut sauce is a fantastic recipe designed for baby-led weaning, allowing your little gourmet to explore new textures and tastes while giving peanut exposure to prevent allergies.
Ingredients
This recipe has just 3 simple ingredients! Tofu, peanut butter, and a little bit of oil for cooking.
Tofu, derived from soybeans, is an excellent source of protein and a versatile addition to your baby’s diet. Paired with a simple peanut sauce, this dish not only introduces your little one to the goodness of tofu but also encourages them to enjoy the rich taste of peanuts.
Benefits of Peanut Exposure
Early introduction to peanuts has been shown to reduce the risk of peanut allergies in infants and children. This recipe provides a safe way to expose your baby to peanuts, as the peanuts are incorporated into a thinner sauce form, reducing the choking hazard. Whole peanuts and thick peanut butter are both choking hazards for babies. As always, it’s essential to consult with your pediatrician before introducing allergenic foods, especially if there is a family history of allergies.
Because both soy (tofu) and peanuts are common allergens, I would recommend this recipe after you’ve already exposed your baby to both allergens separately.
What kind of peanut butter should I use?
I recommend using “natural” peanut butter that doesn’t have any added salt, sugar, or other additives. This is the most pure and healthy option for babies and young kids. Babies under the age of 1 do not need added salt in their diet, and it is recommended to not serve added sugar to babies or toddlers.
Recipe
Tofu with Peanut Sauce for Baby-Led Weaning
Ingredients
- 1/4 block firm tofu
- 1 tsp peanut butter
- 1 tsp olive oil
Instructions
- Drain tofu and pat dry. Cut the tofu into cubes (or strips for younger babies).
- Add oil to a pan and cook the tofu on low-medium heat, a few minutes per side. You don't want the tofu to be crispy since we are serving it to baby; we are going for cooked through and barely starting to yellow.
- In a small bowl, mix peanut butter and 1-2 tsp of water. You can gently heat it in the microwave to help it mix better.
- Add the thinned peanut butter to the pan and coat the tofu. If the sauce is too watery, cook for a little longer until it thickens. Enjoy!
